Book Symposium

Pie Squared

Saturday, May 24th, 12:30pm–3:00pm
Pie stations will be set up around the historic Madison County Courthouse Square and tasting tickets will be available for one dollar each. Each ticket will be good for one taste (one tenth of a pie) and attendees can sample as many homemade pies as they choose.

Savor the delights from the legendary “church ladies” from all over Madison County, who will be baking delectable pies.

The proceeds will be split between the participating churches and the Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

Continuing our tradition of publicizing new books on John Wayne,at 1pm Saturday the Birthplace is presenting a lively symposium where we'll be joined by authors Scott Eyman, Glenn Frankel, Lana Wood and John Wayne’s daughter Aissa Wayne. Also invited is television producer Dan Ford, who wrote the acclaimed biography of his legendary grandfather, “Pappy: The Life of John Ford.”

Author Scott Eyeman

Noted author Scott Eyman will discuss and autograph copies of his latest New York Times bestseller biography, “John Wayne: The Life and Legend” (Simon & Schuster).

Drawing on interviews that Eyman personally conducted with John Wayne before his passing and more than 100 interviews with the actor’s family, co-stars and close associates, Eyman’s biography shows how both the facts and fictions about Wayne illuminate his singular life. He traces Wayne from his Iowa childhood to his stardom in Stagecoach and dozens of films after that.

See Mr. Eyman in a story on CBS News Sunday Morning on “Monument Valley: Mother Nature's scene-stealing movie star”:

author Glenn Frankel

New York Times best-selling author Glenn Frankel will discuss and sign copies his book The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend. Mr. Frankel’s wonderfully engaging and thoroughly researched book is the riveting true account behind that classic Western—and the amazing history of that story, as it was transformed into an American myth. This is the first book to focus on the making of what many consider John Wayne’s greatest film.

Covered Bridge Tours

Covered Bridge Tours

Saturday, May 24 10am & 2pm

Madison County is also world-famous for our covered bridges. The Madison County Chamber of Commerce will have guided tours to some of these legendary structures, departing from the Chamber on the northeast corner of the square at 10am and 2pm on Saturday. Cost is just $8.00 per person.

Cowboy Mounted Shooters

Cowboy Mounted Shooters

At 1pm Saturday, May 24 and again at 10am Sunday, May 25 at the Madison County Fairgrounds, the Iowa Cowboy Mounted Shooters Association will hold one of the fastest equestrian sports in the United States today.

Mounted contestants compete in this action timed event using two .45 caliber single action revolvers, each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition following courses of fire set in a variety of patterns. It’s fascinating to watch as the riders (mostly in traditional western style or the old time style of the late 1800s) race their steeds through the course to get the fastest time and the highest scores!

Lana Wood To Headline The John Wayne Birthplace Museum Benefit Dinner

Lana Wood

Lana as young Debbie in The Searchers

With big sister Natalie Wood

Please join as we welcome screen actress Lana Wood to our 2014 John Wayne Birthday Celebration. Fans of John Ford’s film classic The Searchers recall that Lana was featured as Debbie Edwards, the precocious 8 year-old who is captured early in the film by the Comanches and who later is seamlessly played by her older sister Natalie Wood. Lana, who went on to star as 007 Bond girl Plenty O’Toole in Diamonds are Forever and countless other film and television productions, will share vivid recollections of her first credited screen role including reminisces of John Wayne—who she adored—John Ford, and filming in Monument Valley.

Miss Wood will attend our annual John Wayne Birthplace Museum Benefit Dinner and Auction of John Wayne collectibles and memorabilia on Saturday, May 24. The event will be held on the grounds of the Madison County Historical Complex.

Birthplace fans who return year after year have requested reserved seating for the Museum Benefit Dinner, which we are now offering to those who book early. Seating will be assigned in the order of reservations. Tickets to the Dinner make great gifts for family or friends, so reserve yours now!
